Volunteer
Volunteers are the heart and soul of United Way.
When it comes to building community and changing lives across Peterborough city and county, we couldn’t
do it without volunteer support. Our more than 2,000 volunteers are vital to United Way’s operation and
play an important part in keeping our fundraising costs one of the lowest in Canada.
We are always looking for people that want to make an impact. You can make a difference while connecting
with your community and learning new skills. From individuals to employee teams, one-time support to
long-term opportunities–we have many rewarding volunteer opportunities to suit different interests:
United Way of Peterborough & District is led by a group of senior volunteers elected to oversee the vision and strategic direction of the organization.
The role of the board is to establish organizational policies, focus on long-term goals, evaluate CEO performance and manage funds
in a fiscally responsible manner. Board members must live or work in the Peterborough area, be knowledgeable about the community,
be organized and have valuable experience in labour, business, government, or the voluntary sector. The term is three years.

The Campaign Cabinet is a leading force in the development of annual campaign strategies for United Way of
Peterborough & District and is comprised of a group of experienced volunteers holding a variety of senior positions
in the private and public sector in Peterborough city and county.
This Cabinet develops an integrated annual campaign plan, conducts fundraising visits to prospects, champions the
campaign in its own workplace and participates in cabinet meetings and key events. The Campaign Cabinet members must
hold a senior position in the private or public sector in Peterborough and offer a commitment of at least one year.

Agency & Community Services Committee
The Agency and Community Services Committee is responsible for the processes and systems relative to our
Member Agencies: Organizational Reviews; Fund Distribution; Community Impact Grants; Membership Applications and Agency/United
Way Policies and Procedures.

Fund Distribution Review Teams
United Way of Peterborough & District relies on volunteers from our community to assess the agencies applying for funding
Role:
- Review two or three of the funding applications submitted by agencies
- Work as part of a team in assessing agencies against criteria
- Meet with individuals from the agencies that you are assessing
Qualifications:
- Knowledge of the health and social service sector in Peterborough is an asset
- Well-developed interpersonal skills
- Ability to function effectively as a team member
- Individuals with financial expertise particularly encouraged
- Live or work in Peterborough
Commitment:
- Training is provided and this is a short-term intensive volunteer opportunity from April-May each year.

Role
- Participate in the organization, preparation and implementation of United Way's wide
variety of special events e.g. Starlight Film Fest, Backpacks for Kids, Meet the Petes Breakfast
Qualification
- Willingness to undertake a wide variety of activities relevant to organizing and implementing events
- Be available to attend the events and participate in the activities leading up to them
Commitment
- Varies with nature of event
- Events are often held in the evening and/or on the weekend

United Way of Peterborough & District relies on volunteers from our community to
help with our Backpacks for Kids program. This program has been running for 6 years
and has distributed over 4,000 backpacks to children of Peterborough City and County.
Role:
- Help to fill backpacks with essential school supplies needed for student success
- Work as part of a team
- Organize items and group school orders for distribution to school administrators
- Lift and carry boxes of supplies, unload skids of school supplies, carry full backpacks and load car trunks with backpack orders
Qualifications:
- Able to do some heavy/light lifting
- Well-developed interpersonal skills
- Ability to function effectively as a team member
- Able to follow assembly style backpack stuffing procedure
Commitment:
- Backpacks are stuffed over a two day period in August and distributed on one day in August.
Volunteering done in shift work or full day commitments.
Anyone interested in working with youth must be able to comply with our Abuse Prevention Policy.

United Way of Peterborough & District relies on volunteers from the community to help with our Coats for Kids program.
This program has been running for over 15 years and continues to successfully clothe the youth of Peterborough City and County in warm winter wear.
Role:
- Help to provide friendly customer service to families who come in seeking winter coats
- Work as part of a team
- Organize coats and arrange them by gender and size
- Lift and carry boxes of coats, unload skids of coats, put together coat racks and carry full boxes for repacking and shipping
Qualifications:
- Able to do some heavy/light lifting
- Well-developed interpersonal skills
- Ability to function effectively as a team member
- Organizational skills
- Work in fast paced environment
Commitment:
- Coats for Kids is a program that runs over a two day timeframe (usually Friday and Saturday).
Volunteering done in shift work or full day commitments.
Anyone interested in working with youth must be able to comply with our Abuse Prevention Policy.

Youth Advisory Committee Member
United Way of Peterborough & District relies on youth volunteers from to help with and be a
member of our Youth Advisory Council. This youth council is responsible for fundraising, event planning,
fund distribution and workshop presentations. The committee is always looking for members and is comprised
of youth between the ages of 14 and 19 from Peterborough City and County.
Role:
- Organize fundraising events for the United Way of Peterborough & District’s annual campaign and the Backpacks for Kids program
- Work as part of a team
- Participate in the United Way of Peterborough & District’s Fund Distribution process
- Develop leadership skills while teaching other youth through workshop presentations
- Review applications and interview applicants for the United Way’s Youth Grants Program
Qualifications:
- Between the ages of 14-19
- Leadership experience is an asset but not a requirement
- Ability to function effectively as a team member
- Good organizational skills
Commitment:
- The Youth Advisory Committee requires a one year commitment and meets once or twice a month for one hour each meeting.
Depending on the event, the youth committee will be asked to volunteer their time on some weekends during the fall
campaign and in the summer for the Backpacks for Kids program.

Training and Consulting Facilitators
United Way of Peterborough & District offers flexible and affordable training and consulting service
tailored to meet the unique needs of the non-profit sector. Relevant and timely topics are delivered
through a volunteer team of community minded individuals with expertise in areas including Board development,
fundraising, strategic planning, Human Resources Management, Communications and Marketing, and Leadership Skill Development.
United Way of Peterborough is accepting applications from interested facilitators, consultants
and individuals with expertise related to governance wishing to volunteer with this vital community

Emergency Volunteer Registry
The Emergency Volunteer Registry is a special project of the United Way of
Peterborough & District in partnership with City and County of Peterborough, Peterborough County-City Health Unit,
Peterborough Regional Health Centre and the local non-profit sector. The Registry is designed to facilitate the
intake and distribution of volunteers in the event of a pandemic or localized emergency.
